Background:

Discerning is an adjective that comes from the Old French discerner, meaning to “distinguish (between), separate (by sifting).” More than an accumulation of knowledge, it is indeed the art of distinguishing and separating the right from the wrong, combined with the ability to judge nuances not readily apparent. To become spiritually discerning requires knowledge of God and His Word.

Memory Verse:

“For if you cry for discernment, lift your voice for understanding; If you seek her as silver and search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will discern the fear of the LORD and discover the knowledge of God.” (Proverbs 2:3–5, NASB)

Reflection:

As you reflect on last week’s lesson, what is something that stands out to you about Ezra’s commitment to holiness? What might God be speaking into your life through Ezra’s example?
