Background:
Reading through the Psalms, you will notice a life-changing phrase repeated. It is the phrase “O LORD my God,” and though its words are few, the weight of this truth will lead us in worship for all eternity. Tony Evans, in his sermon series Knowing God’s Names, teaches when you find yourself in a place that seems like a contradiction, God is preparing your heart to understand Him more deeply. Moses found himself in such a place quite a few times in his life, but certainly when God revealed Himself to Moses as Jehovah, or “I AM WHO I AM.” Moses—who was the baby born to deliver and had to be delivered out of a river; the powerful young prince who had to flee to the desert after trying to deal with oppression and slavery in his own strength; the mature shepherd, content to dwell in the shadow of the mountain of God, who found himself called into the very presence of the LORD and into His service as a shepherd of God’s people—found himself drawn to the bush that was on fire and yet did not burn. Moses was personally drawn into the presence of the LORD, into the very presence of Jehovah. In the words of Dr. Evans, “Don’t just look at the bush that’s burning. Look at the God who wants to talk to you through the burning bush.”

“How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them. If I would count them, they are more than the sand. I awake, and I am still with you.” (Psalm 139:17–18, ESV)
