Lord,
As I go through the study this week, let me be in awe of how You are a promise-keeping God. Thank You that I get to serve You, know You, and trust You. Remind me throughout the week that You are my merciful Redeemer and Your plan is always good.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
Memory Verse
“Thus the LORD gave to Israel all the land that he swore to give to their fathers. And they took possession of it, and they settled there. And the LORD gave them rest on every side just as he had sworn to their fathers … ”
Joshua 21:43-44a, ESV
Background
The book of Joshua ends with the Israelites established in the land promised to Abraham’s descendants. This biblical time period represents a major stage in the fulfillment of God’s promises to Abraham (Genesis 12:1-3). The tribes finally receive their inheritance. Nine and a half tribes receive inheritances west of the Jordan, and two and a half tribes are given land east of the Jordan. The Levitical cities are established throughout the nation, so the stage is set for Israel to live as a light to the nations and enjoy rest in God’s presence.
