Background:
The nations in Isaiah’s day challenged the sovereignty of God. Isaiah’s oracles against the nations do more than announce Israel and Judah’s coming restoration in the messianic kingdom—they proclaim the ultimate victory of God. Yahweh, God of Israel and Judah, is in fact the God of the entire world. Yahweh will bring judgment in the times He has appointed. At the same time, Isaiah’s oracles demonstrate the extent of God’s grace. They describe God reaching out redemptively to many who ignored or rejected Him to “attach themselves to the house of Jacob.” In doing so, the oracles set the stage for the fullness of God’s revelation concerning all of the nations and His purpose of moving human history forward for the benefit of His people and His ultimate glory.
Memory Verse:
“For the Lord will have compassion on Jacob and will again choose Israel, and will set them in their own land, and sojourners will join them and will attach themselves to the house of Jacob.” (Isaiah 14:1, ESV)
